‘ROAM LIKE AT HOME’ – EU NEGOTIATORS AGREED ON WHOLESALE CAPS

For a decade, it is a burning issue for the European Commission to reduce and eventually end the surcharges that telecom services devolved to their subscribers each time they cross country borders. Roaming prices have been decreased a lot since 2007. In 2015, due to the measures of the European Commission, an agreement was made between the European Parliament and the Council for the purpose of ending roaming fees for consumers travelling temporarily in the EU. At the same time, the Commission had been entrusted to abolish retail roaming charges from 15 June 2017 in addition to presenting the appropriate proposals.

“Roam-like-at-home” means that the customers will be able to call or change data on their mobile at the same price they pay at home. There will be no need for additional registration to get the benefits from the service as it should be included by default in all customers’ mobile contracts on which operators offer roaming. However, service providers may ask their consumers to prove that their residence is in the Member State of the mobile operator.
