The Entry/Exit System (EES) is now fully operational

As of April 10, 2026, the European Entry/Exit System (EES) is fully in use across all participating countries, including Hungary. The European Union has introduced an advanced, more efficient border control system for third-country nationals entering the Schengen area for short stays.

The EES is a centralized EU IT system that collects and stores biometric data—such as facial images and fingerprints—along with travel details like the time and location of border crossings and any refusals of entry. These records are typically kept for up to three years. The system is designed to enhance external border security, reduce irregular migration, detect overstays, and assist in preventing and investigating terrorism.

Since its partial introduction in October 2025, the EES has recorded over 45 million border crossings. More than 24,000 individuals have been denied entry due to reasons including insufficient justification for travel or invalid or fraudulent documents. Additionally, the system has helped identify over 600 individuals considered security risks.

To support its implementation, Hungary has upgraded its border control infrastructure and obtained the necessary technical equipment with EU funding
