Another blow to data transfers to the US

After the ground-breaking decision of the Austrian data protection authority, the French DPA made the same decision which says that the continuous use of Google Analytics violates the GDPR and they have ordered the websites to comply with the GDPR. The French Data Protection Authority published the decision on 16 February 2022. The decisions follow the invalidation of the Privacy Shield that set out the rules for US data transfers.

It is expected that many data protection authorities will follow this in the near future. The companies most concerned about the above are Google and Meta Platforms (Facebook), however, it is relevant for almost all EU websites, since Google Analytics is the most common statistics program. The US giants such as Google and Meta Platforms have already announced, as a pressure, that they may leave Europe as a result of the new decisions.
