The new council dealing with artificial intelligence: the Hungarian AI Council
A new body responsible for the domestic implementation of the EU’s AI regulation has been established, and it held its inaugural meeting on 15 December 2025 at the Ministry of Energy. The Hungarian AI Council supports strategic policymaking in relation to artificial intelligence pursuant to the Hungarian AI Act. The body brings together representatives from science, academia, universities, authorities, and economic stakeholders. The Council will primarily address professional and technical issues, and by involving the scientific and higher education sectors, it seeks to gather the broadest possible expertise in order to be able to provide answers to any questions arising in the field of artificial intelligence.
In addition to the Hungarian AI Council, two organizations performing regulatory authority functions will also be established. The first is a notifying authority operating within the National Accreditation Authority. Companies that have developed products using artificial intelligence and wish to have their products accredited may turn to this body. The second is a market surveillance authority, which will operate as a department within the Ministry for National Economy. Its role will be similar to that of consumer protection authorities; it will monitor the market and protect the interests of consumers.
