Its purpose is to register non-EU citizens entering for short stays, meaning no more than 90 days within any 180-day period. The automated, digital control system records travellers’ data each time they cross the border of a participating country. During the registration process, passengers’ passports are scanned, their photograph is taken, and their fingerprints are collected. The aim of the new control system is to enhance the security of the Schengen Area, check visa overstayers, and reduce identity-related fraud.
The EES is being introduced gradually from 18 November at Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport. The regulation affects only non-EU citizens, who should expect temporarily longer waiting times during border checks. For passengers holding an EU passport, the border-crossing process remains unchanged.
